Last week I headed down to Northampton, MA to visit the Lyman Conservatory at Smith College. It’s core greenhouse dates back to 1895, and it is one of the few remaining plant conservatories in the US that was built in the nineteenth century.
This was the perfect time to visit, as the tulips, daffodils, and all manner of bulb flowers were out in force in the first two greenhouses of the labyrinth that makes up the conservatory. It felt like Easter, and smelled divine!
As you continued through the rooms, you arrive in the larger, older greenhouses that hold huge tropical plants, palms, and even a cocoa tree! From there you worked your way to the desert rooms, with dozens, if not hundreds of varieties of cactus and desert plants! It reminded me of my many road trips through the southwest deserts as a kid.
The tour was the perfect preparation for Easter, and I went home thinking about how it’s time to turnover my closet officially to spring! I can’t wait for the warmer weather to roll in so all the tulips and daffodils in the garden will grow!
