Winter has not come to southern New Hampshire yet…we have about 2 inches of snow on the ground, and that’s it. I’m hoping the big snow comes soon…just three feet…please! For me if it’s cold, it has to be accompanied by snow, otherwise winter can get long, and boring, and sad.
So! I was very happy to get away to the mountains for a weekend earlier this month. I was invited by Sunday River ski resort in Maine to join them for the women’s Holiday Hangover event. They are making this event and annual tradition after the holidays, and this was their first one. It was a triumph, and all the ladies seemed to have an amazing time. From yoga, to big mountain breakfasts, to group skiing before the mountain opened, to ski demos, and freestyle classes, to a sunrise hike to the top…the event was a great success!
It was my first time up to Sunday River, and I fell in love. A typical day at the resort might look something like this: Start the morning at the Jordan Hotel with their delicious breakfast buffet (try the potatoes, they were my favorite), then you could pick up your snowboard or skis and ride/ski right out of the hotel and to the lift. Once at the top, make your way up and down across the peaks, until you arrive at the Waffle Cabin at the Barker Lodge…enjoy a good Belgian waffle with chocolate drizzle. After you have reinforced yourself with sugar, head to the North Peak Lodge for a great view with your lunch at the cafeteria (get the cinnamon roll), or, if you are patient and wait for a table, the Mountain Room at the lodge is delicious, and always popular! I very much enjoyed my meal at the Mountain Room…indulging on the tomato soup and grilled cheese, which was fantastic! If you ski down to the base of the Chondola, and head inside, you will find hot chocolate and mini donuts at the Coffee Hound. Keep skiing away into the evening…and then I highly recommend you driving into the town of Bethel, to the Gem Theater for their pizza, popcorn, and a movie. We saw Mary Poppins Returns, and I enjoyed all the different toppings you could choose for your popcorn.
So my days at the resort revolved heavily around food, which is fine, since you are getting a workout on the slopes!
Thank you so much, Sunday River, for hosting this wonderful event! I can’t wait to come back to the mountain for some more skiing in the future!
